<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The article "more women entrepreneurs starting business by Alex Beall, looks at the rate at which women across the globe are getting into entrepreneurship and at a rate that is far out reaching men. Many are engaged in startups and or some type of entrepreneurial activity. This is a good sign that shows that more women are taking the path to successfully forging their independence to rise out of poverty, abuse and violent situations, and creating economic, social and political independence for themselves and their children.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Citing a study that was conducted in 2012, the author states that "the rate of entrepreneurial activity among women has increased by 7 % across 61 world economies". It also says that the "entrepreneurial gap between men and women has narrowed by 6% with 11% women participating in an entrepreneurial activity versus 16% men. The article also points out that this entrepreneurial trend is more visible among women Africa, Asia and the Oceanian regions than in developed economies according to the GEM Report.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; line-height: 1em;">According to the author, "GEM reported 200 million women in the 83 economies analyzed are starting or running a new business. That’s in addition to the 128 million women who are running already existing businesses. In half of the economies, women are on par or surpassing men in innovation — providing new services or products not generally offered by competitors".

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Dr. Cheryl Cottle, the founder of Cottle’s Professional Consulting has been the mastermind behind many innovative programs with the goal of furthering the empowerment of women globally. One such initiative is the Women in Business Radio show which is an online Blog Talk Radio program.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Some of the other initiatives that she has implemented are Women in Business on Facebook; a group dedicated to Women-Owned Businesses — a program that was implemented seven years ago. To aid her group in accomplishing its goals, Dr. Cottle also founded a Women in Business Mentoring Programme, as well as Women in Business Global Network, to facilitate the business development of her members, as well as creating a mastermind group for the collaborative knowledge-building to find ways to enhance women's empowerment at a local and global level. Five years ago Dr. Cheryl Cottle introduced Women in Business Radio; to facilitate the development, motivation and empowerment of women globally; and implemented five years ago, <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Simply Inspirational for Women in Business Journal. <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Dr. Cottle has been a teacher for many years and began her teaching career in Trinidad and Tobago. She attended Teacher Training College and was trained in the principles of Teaching and Learning and the implications of sociology and psychology in education. Her teaching experience also extends to the United States and Canada where she worked primarily with young adults and adult literacy. In addition, Dr. Cottle is also a researcher, advocate for social justice, equality and the empowerment of women. She also believes in utilizing alternative approaches to teaching and learning and see them as equally useful as formal approaches. Further, Dr. Cottle holds a Bachelors of Arts degree from the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine campus, in English and History (African and Caribbean history). Dr. Cottle is also a researcher, advocate for social justice, equality and the empowerment of women. She also believes in utilizing alternative approaches to teaching and learning and see them as equally useful as formal approaches.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Dr. Cheryl Cottle holds a doctorate degree from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto where she studied Curriculum, Teaching and Learning and Computer Applications. Her doctoral dissertation is entitled “A Case Study on Three organizations to Facilitate the Adoption, Diffusion and Infusion of Computer Technology in the Workplace" with great implication for education, business organizations and community-based organizations.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Dr. Cottle is an educator, researcher, Instructional Technology Specialist and social media expert. She hold a doctorate in Curriculum Teaching and Learning and Computer-Applications and Measurement and Evaluation, from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto. Her doctoral research examined the socio-technical implications of computer technology in the workplace.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Dr. Cheryl Cottle also holds a Master’s of Science degree in Instructional Technology and Instructional Systems Design from New York Institute of Technology as well as garnered extensive knowledge in Psychology; interviewing skills and behavior modification.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Dr. Cottle is also the creator and founder of Women in Business group on Facebook; one of the largest homogenous groups on the social media site with almost 14, 500 plus members, and every day the membership is growing. To garner such a large niche, Dr. Cottle has shown that she has the ability to network, interact and to form relationships with people. The goal of Women in Business is to ensure that it stays a socially-interactive space where participation is fostered and her new motto "Participation-Before-Posting" is the mantra of the group and very interestingly where the objective is to use "comment" rather than "like" only because it says so much more.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Dr. Cheryl Cottle has brought her academic experience, knowledge and expertise of using online forum from her post-graduate studies where she extensively studied online environments for teaching and learning with the implication for social learning and higher learning. With this experience, she was able to adapt Facebook and created a group that best serves her needs and her target audience's needs.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Some of the strategies and theories that Dr. Cottle has transferred to making Women in Business a holistic group are collaboration — including collaborative knowledge -building, sharing, the creation of ideas and the generation of knowledge, a place where everyone's ideas are valued, and a place where you can take from the pool of knowledge information that applies to you that you can integrate into your own situation and in no way least by remembering the importance of "timely response" which is so important to foster communication and ensuring a social environment. It is also a community that thrive on democracy rather than autocratic approach to management, thus giving all the members a place where they too can create a discussion, or create and showcase an idea or concept that the whole group would benefit from. It is truly a community where commitment, social connectedness and a feeling of belonging are fostered.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In this section of her expose, she will describe in more details some of her initiatives that are designed to empower women, particularly women entrepreneurs. She will discuss further, her social media group on Facebook — Women in Business, Simply Inspirational for Women in Business Journal, and elaborate a little more about Women in Business Radio — looking at her guests and listenership.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Women in Business on Facebook is designed for women who have created their own business from an idea or concept — a business that they have birthed, started, developed and moving it to a stage of sustainability. Women in Business™ is one of the largest group on the social media site with 14, 500 plus members and every day the membership is growing.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">It is a great space for both women and men who are involved in any type of entrepreneurial venture. It is a very supportive environment and it provides opportunities for networking, marketing, and advertising your products or services. Education is also an integral part of its design and goals.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This group also provides an opportunity for business women to share their experiences, learn about how others deal with challenges, and to find solutions to their personal situations. It is a space where the members can network in a constructive way. CPC Women in Business™ is a collaborative learning environment where members learn from each other, asking questions, generating ideas and creating new knowledge to grow their respective business.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This forum provides a platform from which its members can showcase their business information including; websites, blogs or other marketing information, thus creating a marketing network system. <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Dr. Cottle is honest when she says that "I believe in the power of entrepreneurship as the one true activity that facilitates women's emancipation. It is the only vocation that is truly transformational." "As an entrepreneur, you have control and power in the decision to make your life purposeful and authentic" she further states. "It is your ideas, your creation . . . it is your time and passion that goes into it to fashioning it into your likeness." "Your business grows to the extent of the time, energy and passion that is put into it." "You must have the power to ignite the flames of entrepreneurship to make sure your business moves from its initial birth seed to a sustainable business venture."
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Women in Business™ is designed for women entrepreneurs and is an integral portfolio of Cottle's Professional Consulting with two mandate, one is for profit while the other serves to facilitate and promote women entrepreneurship at a global level. Women in Business ™ was introduced to Dr. Cottle's consulting firm in 2005. Our membership consists of women who actively run and manage their own businesses. We are a group for business women who have birthed a business concept and are actively developing a viable and sustainable business venture. Education, training, motivation and empowerment are the key focus of Women in Business ™

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Women in Business™ (group) is built on Dr. Cottle's belief in the theory of social interaction and constructivist theory of learning. Dr. Cottle believes that online forums can be modeled along the lines of face-to-face groups to encourage social interaction and facilitate meaningful networking; and it's also in keeping with using online environments for teaching and learning. It is also based on the notion that collaboratively, we can generate information, and create new knowledge to facilitate each other’s knowledge-building capacity. Dr. Cottle also believes that online groups can serve as a catalyst for informal learning, providing a non-threatening and non-judgmental environment to facilitate sharing and learning.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Dr. Cottle, notes that “not all our contributors are novice and expert writers, but we do have a fair share of contributors who are expert author, poets and photographers, who have consistently contributed to the publication. However, many are simply women writing for the first time, contributing to something larger; to facilitate the education, inspiration and empowerment of women globally. These women in spite of their first time entry as writers, they are experienced in their respective field of businesses. They are simply sharing what they have experienced, know and studied with our audience, to enhance your businesses. For the very least, they raise some issues that our readership can think about as they pursue their entrepreneurial path. Dr. Cottle hopes that through this publication her readership will be able to transform their thinking and create a vision that will revolutionized their businesses.”

Women in Business experience challenges in their businesses at varying stages of their business cycle, particularly four months into it. It is important that we conduct an assessment of our business to know if our goals and objectives that we identified in the beginning of the year, are moving as planned. An assessment helps us to identify what is working — what is effective and what is not, and helps us to either remove them or modify them to meet our business needs.

Challenges are not new —challenges are not uncommon in our entrepreneurial journey. A great many of us have been there, and we have had experiences in solving any challenges and taking our businesses forward. We have used strategies that have been tried and that which can be regarded as best practice that others can use. We can learn by trial-and-error but it can be very costly and time consuming. As an educator, a business coach and business consultant, I strongly recommend that women in business can learn from each other. Sharing of knowledge, is one of the best way to facilitate our knowledge building. Utilizing an informal approach to learning is a great way of learning and development, hence a “learning circle” was chosen as the medium through which to facilitate our knowledge building on best practices we can use to take our business forward.

Women in Business Radio Summit was chosen as a prime forum for delivering the message of “Women Stories of Challenge in Business and the Strategies used to Overcome” because it is an online radio broadcasting program that reaches a global audience. Individuals interested in the issues addressed can accessed the program either live or in archive. Individuals also have the option to call into the show and participate. It’s a very interactive space that encourages the active participation of our listenership. The summit was intended to inspire and motivate women entrepreneurs; especially at this stage of their business cycle. It was designed to energized, reignite the spirit of entrepreneurship and rejuvenate your passion. It was a 3 day radio summit and was delivered through Women in Business Radio.

Our guest speakers were women in business leaders who have had some challenges to deal with during the course of their entrepreneurial journey that threatened the survival of their businesses — and have been where you are today in your business. However, with the right attitude and strategies they were able to overcome the challenges and take their businesses forward. We do not always have to create the wheel. While trial-and-error is a way to learn, it can take some time before we see the results; and in the meanwhile it can cost a lot in terms of time, effort and human resources. I hope you join our “learning circle” to listen in archive to our online broadcast on Tuesday, 21st, Wednesday, 22nd and Thursday, 23th — 3 days of sharing.

Our guest speakers were also role models, leaders of their own visionary programs and mentors to thousands of women globally and — and you too can benefit from their knowledge and expertise. Each of them were excited to be a part of this tele-summit, and accepted the invitation to participate in this radio summit to facilitate the motivation, development and empowerment of women, through entrepreneurship and women leadership.

The tele-summit was intended to create a space where women could be inspired and motivated through the shared experiences of women who have experienced challenges and overcome them; with the end goal of education and empowerment. “It's my goal that the information and knowledge generated by this summit will serve to enlighten women on ways that they can use to make their entrepreneurial objectives survive. Overall it is intended to facilitate dialogue, active participation, involvement and learning, says, Dr. Cottle.

In order to achieve success in our business, some of us would have paused to assess the situation and come up fighting — implementing strategies that worked to put our business back on stream. This summit is an opportunity for our guest speakers to share their strategies with women business owners who have been struggling to keep their business afloat this quarter of our business cycle; and is thinking maybe I should cut my losses and quit. This summit is for you.

The first four months of the year into our business cycle . . . I think is a crucial time in our business history . . . and it is a time that reflects our business success; but we are in a good place. We can still put our business on stream and be successful at the end of the year. We still have eight months to save our business. This summit will afford you with knowledge of best practice — best practice that have proven to be successful. We can make it Happen! We can put our business on stream and be successful!

This summit was designed for the woman entrepreneur who has been experiencing some challenges in keeping her business flowing the way she would like it. Research shows that one of the challenges faced by women in business is having to manage her business all alone, together with her myriads of other roles and responsibilities — and juggling them all, generally resulting in burnout. There do not seems to be enough time to get the training and development skills that you need to take your business further. Some times we don't have the time or resources to take a course that will help us gain the knowledge and skills that we need to develop ourselves to take our business, just one step further, even if it is a course that is offered free in our local community center. Our family responsibilities often make it difficult to benefit from such programs. This tele-summit was delivered online, through Women in Business Radio; therefore making it very easy for you to access; and you can also access it in archive at your convenience. Join us in archive, and enlarge your knowledge base on some strategies and ways of taking your business forward. You do not have to fail.

I want to invite you to yet another International Women's Day, Women in Business celebration. Last year was the first time that I introduced an IWD event to celebrate the women who are members of Women in Business. Our event was entitled: “Successfully Forging a Livelihood through Entrepreneurship.” Several women took the time out of their very busy day to be a part of that auspicious occasion, sharing their ideas, thoughts, expertise and experience on the topic of entrepreneurship and where they believe entrepreneurship can be of benefit to the lives of a woman globally.

The event was well received. To learn more about it, you can check out our report on: Successfully Forging a Livilihood Through Entrepreneurship or you can visit us in archive at: Women in Business Radio. However, for this year’s International women's Day celebration I am hosting an event that looks at — Women’s Health and Physical Health Well-ness — a great way to celebrate International Women's Day.

Research on women entrepreneurs shows that we lead very busy lives, involving our roles as an entrepreneur plus in our personal lives — our life as a wife, mother, care giver to our parents, caregivers to relatives and our involvement in community activities. We live very crowded lives plus running a business. It does have a toll on us, and for many of us, as we work to ensure that we do everything, we neglect who we are — our mental health and physical health suffers. We often gets burnout and we also often do not have a contingency plan, and when we become sick it becomes a real challenge — from the perspective of finance, and who do we get now to run our business. Our business often fails in situation like this.

This year’s event is also in keeping with IWD theme “make it happen” — which suggests that what ever we focus on or want, can happen. In essence we can do what we want if we “make it happen”. Our health is at the top of our needs - - it should be our number one focus — and for women entrepreneurs — if we want our business to grow, develop and become a sustainable business entity — we must be in the driver’s seat and we have to be focused.

I am reminded of a quote by Michelle Obama that says;

“Women in particular need to keep an eye on their physical and mental health, because if we're scurrying to and from appointments and errands, we don't have a lot of time to take care of ourselves. We need to do a better job of putting ourselves higher on our own 'to do' list.”

We are guided by the social expectations that we are suppose to do everything — or we can do every thing alone; and that we can do them all with the same level of high performance. We are not expected to ask for help or support — that’s a sign of weakness. What happens — we become burnout and eventually becoming ill — this is when our mental health and physical health suffers.
The goals for this event are:
• To start a dialogue on women health and physical health wellness — to break the social stigmas and taboo associated with it and that which keeps us in silence and in isolation.
• Spread awareness overall

To implement the summit; I have a group of women who are both professional practitioners in the area of complimentary treatment and holistic/alternative care providers; who will share their perspectives. You can join us and be a part of our audience, where you too can ask a question or share your stories, and point- of- views.

A little about the history of International Women’s Day: International Women’s day first started with great unrest, critical debate amongst women, who was advocating against: women’s’ oppression and inequality. They began this campaign to change our social, economic and political position and facilitate women’s growth and empowerment.

This campaign started in 1908, and it was first comprised of women from the United States of America and later involving women from Germany and by 1910, involving women from 17 countries across the world women representing trade unions, socialist parties, working women’s’ clubs, and 3 women who had been elected to the Finnish parliament. These women attended the International Conference of Working Women that was held in Copenhagen in 1910. What was born out of this conference, was —The International Women’s Day.

What broadened the debate was the fire in the United States in 1911 in New York City which took the lives of 140 workers, most of them Italian and Jewish immigrants — this disastrous event had significant effect on their call for change; rather that only having women’s oppression, and inequality; better working conditions and labour legislation became a focus of the women’s cause.

The International Women's Day was first celebrated/honored in 1911 and was hosted in Austria, Denmark and Switzerland on 19 March, 1911.
However, the International Women's Day was officially declared; and in 1913 it was held for the first time on 8 March and had been observed ever since. Since the birth of IWD it has grown to become a global celebration involving women from across developed and developing countries. Whereas in the earlier days, it only involved women from the United states of America and some European Countries, it now includes women from Afghanistan, Armenia, Belarus, Cambodia, China, Cuba, Georgia, Guinea-Bissau, Eritrea, Laos, Madagascar, Moldova, Mongolia, Uganda, Russia, Vietnam, Ukraine, and a few others. It is now every woman’s struggle transcending race and class. It’s every woman's goal to achieve, social, political and economic empowerment.

What came out of the women’s campaign to end oppression and inequality that begun in 1908 ended with the achievements of:

For equal recognition of women in the arts

For greater awareness of women’s equality

For growth of women’s owned businesses

For financial independence of women

For more women in science, engineering and technology

In this new millennium, yes! women have achieved a lot but . . . the unfortunate fact is that women are still not paid equally to that of their male counterparts, women still are not present in equal numbers in business or politics, and globally women's education, health and the violence against them is worse than that of men.

As a result the struggle continues. I felt that for this Year’s International Women’s Day celebration, a summit that looks at women’s mental health and physical health well-ness is a great place to begin, we can only achieve success by being in the driver’s seat, and for us to do so, we must be healthy.

At the end of the summit a summary statement will be made. For details of it see!

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I am Dr. Cheryl Cottle, the host of Women in Business Radio. Thanks for joining me on International Women’s Day, as the WIB Radio Summit: Mental Health and Physical health Well-ness for Women Entrepreneurs and Women in general, came to an end. This event has been implemented to celebrate the women who have taken up entrepreneurship as a vocation and is successfully making a livelihood through it — supporting her family, herself and contributing to the development of her community as well as contributing to her country’s economy.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">It was also conducted to celebrate the achievement of the women who had fought for and achieved, social, economic and political independence of women — a struggle that was fought in the early part of the 1900’s and gained approval in 1923 with the first acknowledgement of these women achievement. When the struggle for women’s equity, for equal treatment and safer working conditions first started in involved women from the United States of America and parts of Europe, but today it has become a global cause of all women regardless of race, color, class, education, religion, geography or sexual orientations. Women globally are still continuing the struggle to end discrimination and gain equality. The struggles continues although, women have acquired:

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">equal recognition of women in the arts

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">greater awareness of women’s equality

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">the growth of women’s owned businesses

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">fairer recognition of women in sports

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">financial independence of women

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">for more women in senior leadership positions

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">and for more women in science, engineering and technology<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In today’s society we still see that women are not able to reach the glass ceiling, or hold higher management positions in organizations, and in the positions that they are able to achieve, they do not receive the same salary even when they have similar skills and education; as a result, the struggle continues until women reach equality in every sector of our lives and it’s a pledge that every woman should take.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I ask you to join me today where I continue the discussion on “Mental Health and Physical Health Well-ness of Women.” I will like to take this opportunity to thank you for listening in to the radio summit. You can visit us in archive and listen to our many broadcasts — which started on Monday 2nd March and throughout, until today — Sunday 8th March.
Thanks!

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">You will find that some of the issues addressed in this radio summit to be very informative and educational. Throughout the broadcast, as the coordinator and facilitator, I have looked at several issues that focus on mental health and physical health well-ness and the many care modalities that are available that one can use personally and on an ongoing basis — the use of traditional care and alternative care modalities.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Some of the issues that addressed were:

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The role of social stigma and social taboos that keeps us in a position where we feel ashamed of talking about our mental health and physical health wellness — and prevents us from seeking the support and treatment that we need.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">How do we get rid of debilitating negative beliefs that prevent us, overall from achieving well-ness?

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The importance of support — family support and people that we have in our lives — friends and family members.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The importance of self-love and self-care in maintaining our mental health and physical health well-ness.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Yes, the importance of taking a proactive approach to your mental health and physical health well-ness.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">These are some of the issues we addressed in the radio summit. We promise that this radio summit will be enlightening, informative, educational and empowering. Women’s well-ness is important to their continued success as entrepreneurs. If we are expected to achieve their business goals or achieve our ambitions or vision that we have . . . we must be mentally, physically and spiritually well. It is only then that we can achieve . . . what we want . . . We can make it happen!
This article provides some useful tips that as women in business, we should be concerned with for our mental health and physical health wellness. The articles looks at the role of:

nutrition

Rest

Exercise

Socialization

Community involvement

Building relationships

The author points out that; sound nutrition, proper exercise, adequate sleep and healthy lifestyle
are known to be effective steps to maintaining physical health, but they
also correlate to good, sound mental health as well, he said.

Another element that boosts mental health is attending to one’s
spiritual health. Giving to others, being involved in your community,
being involved socially, being out and connected to other people are all
part of maintaining one’s mental health, he said.
For more details see! Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00464864977375079290noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8384408521551374229.post-35861676733799174782015-03-19T00:24:00.002-04:002015-03-19T00:46:12.786-04:00Article Review: On Surviving Domestic ViolenceBy Dr. Cheryl Cottle
This is a story of a woman who has been in an abusive relationship for over twenty years.
She began her story by saying:

“It was the very day that we got home from our honeymoon and there I was
lying on the bathroom floor, naked and bleeding. He didn’t like the way
I hung the towels in the bathroom. That was the beginning of my
marriage. The abuse—physical, sexual, emotional and economic—would
continue for 20 years.”

The
article provides us with signs that women can look for to know if her
boyfriend is abusive and what will be his actions towards her when they
are married. The article provides some signs of abuse as well as
suggest what you do when you are able to eventually get the courage to
leave the abusive relations. It also talks about the silence of abuse —
where women silently endure their abuse; as if they have created it and therefore deserves the treatment they are receiving.

Self-love and high self-worth are two attributes that women should possess in order to achieve the success that they strive for in their daily lives. For many women these qualities or attributes are elusive. Many women strive to achieve them but often fall short. One might say, why do we need them? What is so special about them? Well, they are very special to our overall growth and development; and by that I mean our social, psychological, mental, physiological and spiritual growth and development.

It’s what women need to live a life of wealth and abundance. It’s what women need to be able to live a life that is meaningful and purposeful. In addition, without a positive outlook about who we are, women also cannot live a life that is authentic; and many of us strive or want to achieve this state of being. To many women, particularly entrepreneurial women, it's the optimum way of being.

Before looking at these two concepts I believe that it is very important to define what they mean to understand when we lack self-love and have a low perception of ourselves — what they mean.
My search reveals that self-love is about loving oneself, not in an arrogant, conceited or egocentric way, rather, it is about caring for oneself, taking responsibility for who you are, respecting oneself and knowing who you are. It is about being realistically and honest of your strengths and weaknesses. It is a psychological term that was proposed by psychologist and social philosopher Erich Fromm, in 1957. (Wikipedia)

Self-worth on the other hand is the sense of one’s own value. It is tied into one’s self-esteem and reflects a person’s overall emotional evaluation of one’s own worth. It is judgement of oneself as well as an attitude towards your self. The definition of self-love and self-worth provides us with a way of looking at this psycho-social analysis of who we perceive ourselves to be. (Wikipedia)

In looking at this social phenomenon, some of the questions that were raised were:

How does self-love and self-worth negatively affect an individual perception of money? What can one do to have a profitable business?

What role do society and our socialization play in how we feel about ourselves?

Is self-love or lack of self-love and low self-worth tied into people’s limiting beliefs that affect how they feel and that which affects us in our business . . . particularly in how they value their product or services?

Can change our perception of self-love and high self-worth? Can someone who lacks self-love and has low-self worth, change?

What is required for their transformation?
Research has shown that women who have low-self-love or perceive themselves as having no value, have a problem asserting themselves and lack the confidence that they can set goals and achieve them. However, there is research also that is showing that the negative perception that they have of themselves can change by develop positive ways of seeing and valuing who they are.

I invite you to listen to the pod cast included with this article to gain a better insight on the questions that were asked.

Author: Dr. Cheryl Cottle

Anger is an emotion that affects us so terribly that it affects our social interaction with others, how we perceive ourselves, and our health and well- being. It causes us to loose balance; physical, mental, sociological, and spiritual.

According to these two quotes:
Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned. by Buddha, could not say it better.

Mark Twain also says, that “anger is an acid that can do more harm to the vessel in which it is stored than to anything on which it is poured.”

Anger affects the one who carries the emotion and not the person to whom it is directed. How we respond to stuff in our lives reflects how we feel and act. We are often angered by what someone says about us, or what someone has done to us. But many a times we are angered by the passing of a loved one. We may think that the person has gone too soon, and therefore feels that you have been cheated in having the opportunity to spend more time with that person. In some instances, you may think that you were cheated, because you did not have the opportunity to say, “I love you.” Anger is not always evoked by the negative things that someone has done to you. It is not always tied to rage and revenge.

The color of anger varies. It could be direct or indirect. Some years ago I realized that my heath was tied into how I responded to things in my life. I was particularly dealing with the passing of my father, whom I found passed away too early and was angry. It took me a while to grieve and deal with my loss. In order to regain my health I had to let go and learn to forgive him and myself, and come to accept that his passing was a part of the natural process of life and death. I had to learn to forgive him for going to soon, and forgive myself for thinking that he could control the process of change. It was only then that I was able to work towards regaining my health, and though it was very challenging, the progress that I made towards rebuilding myself: body, mind and spirit was quite rewarding. I found that the sun rises again and that behind every dark cloud there is a silver lining. I advise everyone to get rid of anger. Purge it out of your mind. What’s in the mind also affect our body and our spirit.

Letting Go of Resentments
Tony Morrison says, “wanna fly, you got to give up the shit that weighs you down.”

Our old "garbage" is so precious to us. We tenderly harbor our old resentments and periodically throw them pieces of fresh flesh to keep them alive. We nurture our anger. We don't do anything to work it through or let it go; we just hang on and nurture it. And we wonder why we feel so stuck and held back in our lives.

When we hold on to old resentment, it weighs us down. It is as if our feet are stuck in fresh tar.
There comes a time when we can see that it doesn't really matter what someone has done to us, our holding on to it is hurting us, not them, and if we want to heal, we had best take our old anger and fertilize flowers. The only way to grow is to let go!

this with you! It is about holding on to anger and unpleasant
experiences and how to relinquish it to create pleasant thoughts and
experiences. Hope you enjoy it! Have a great day and an equally great
weekend!

When designing a home office it requires that you create a professional atmosphere and that often include equipping it with office furniture, office equipments and the overall feel and layout of the space. I recommend that you have an entrance to your office that is separate from your living space. I also suggest that if you can afford to have a waiting room or a reception area that would certainly add to the level of professionalism that you bring to your home office. This area should be decorated using office furniture and not home furnishing; to distinguish the functionality of the space.

While most entrepreneurs will agree that creating a space that is dedicated to your home-based business is critical, everyone just might not be able to create a space with the features mentioned above. However with some creativity, you can find many options that just might work as well to separate your home life from your work life that at least gives you the psychological separateness required to run and manage a home-based business.

Regardless of the type of business you are in, if you work from home, you will need a space that is dedicated for your business operation. You don’t need to discriminate; you can use a small nook within your house. Some common spaces used by my clients include working from their kitchen table, converting a closet into an office, working from their attic, garages, basement, or converting a bedroom to create a studio. A client of mine created a sewing studio for her workshops and doubles it up as a space for her video production and DYI projects; outfitted with her sewing machine, fabrics, notions, etc, and media equipments. Another client, a yoga and aromatherapy consultant uses one of her living room area as a studio and show room for her client’s. Another client has converted his basement into a top-of-the-line recording studio.

An interview with a creative entrepreneur revealed that creating a space to work in if you are a work-at-home entrepreneur can indeed have a powerful effect on your creativity and productivity and increases your chance of success in your business. She noted that, “having a space at home where I can create in is great ― it allows me to be focused; I can close my door and move into the entrepreneurial aspect of my life. A space specifically designed for my business allows me to surround myself with things that motivate me ― things that fuel my creativity.”
She also indicated that by creating a workspace at home if you are a work-at-home entrepreneur helps you to better organize your material, informational material, and your thoughts and ideas. She sees life as very compartmentalized, and adds that, “we do not cook in our den; we cook in our kitchen ― it is where we create our meals and experiment with new ways of cooking. It is where we sit and spend some quality time with our children, spouses and other family members if we live in an extended family unit. We also relax in our drawing room, patio or den. A dedicated space to work also helps us to achieve our highest performance and increase our productivity overall.”

Here are a few reminders why creating a dedicated space for your business is great:

A home office puts you in the right mindset for working and creating ― it makes you feel grounded and provides the right climate for concentration

It increases your productivity because it blocks out distractions ― it is a place where you can organize your informational material and business resources where you can easily access them

It enables you to threat your entrepreneurial venture as a business instead of a hobby

A dedicated space reserved for working also enables you to be more organized and keeps you more focused since you can be easily swayed to do other things ― the distractions at home can be many

Enables children and family members to see what you are doing as a serious undertaking thus engendering greater respect and acknowledgement

These tips have worked for me and for my clients; maybe you too can adopt them. They just might make working from home a more rewarding and profitable venture.

I read this article and found it very informative and educational for women entrepreneurs. These 25 common practice that we should heed is great advice. They are some best practices that will help us to take our business forward. I believe that it is a great list for "women in business" and I hope that my members of Women in Business are able to benefit from this great data source. They are particularly designed for the "women in business" and according to my definition of "women in business" they are the women entrepreneurs who have birthed a business from an idea and have grown it from a start-up through it's development phase into a sustainable economic entity. It's her business — it's a woman owned business. ~ Dr. Cheryl Cottle

Do you have what it takes to get through hard times? Here are the traits that help home-based business owners thrive

Regardless of your definition of success, there are, oddly enough, a great number of common characteristics that are shared by successful businesspeople. You can place a check beside each characteristic that you feel that you possess. This way, you can see how you stack up. Even if you don’t have all of these characteristics, don’t fret. Most can be learned with practice and by developing a winning attitude, especially if you set goals and apply yourself, through strategic planning, to reach those goals in incremental and measurable stages.

The Home Business Musts
Like any activity you pursue, there are certain musts that are required to be successful in a chosen activity. To legally operate a vehicle on public roadways, one must have a driver’s license; to excel in sports, one must train and practice; to retire comfortably, one must become an informed investor and actively invest for retirement. If your goal is success in business, then the formula is no different. There are certain musts that have to be fully developed, implemented and managed for your business to succeed. There are many business musts, but this article contains I believe to be some of the more important musts that are required to start, operate and grow a profitable home business.

Do what you enjoy.
What you get out of your business in the form of personal satisfaction, financial gain, stability and enjoyment will be the sum of what you put into your business. So if you don’t enjoy what you’re doing, in all likelihood it’s safe to assume that will be reflected in the success of your business–or subsequent lack of success. In fact, if you don’t enjoy what you’re doing, chances are you won’t succeed.

Take what you do seriously.
You cannot expect to be effective and successful in business unless you truly believe in your business and in the goods and services that you sell. Far too many home business owners fail to take their own businesses seriously enough, getting easily sidetracked and not staying motivated and keeping their noses to the grindstone. They also fall prey to naysayers who don’t take them seriously because they don’t work from an office building, office park, storefront, or factory. Little do these skeptics, who rain on the home business owner’s parade, know is that the number of people working from home, and making very good annual incomes, has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years.

Plan everything.
Planning every aspect of your home business is not only a must, but also builds habits that every home business owner should develop, implement, and maintain. The act of business planning is so important because it requires you to analyze each business situation, research and compile data, and make conclusions based mainly on the facts as revealed through the research. Business planning also serves a second function, which is having your goals and how you will achieve them, on paper. You can use the plan that you create both as map to take you from point A to Z and as a yardstick to measure the success of each individual plan or segment within the plan.

Manage money wisely.
The lifeblood of any business enterprise is cash flow. You need it to buy inventory, pay for services, promote and market your business, repair and replace tools and equipment, and pay yourself so that you can continue to work. Therefore, all home business owners must become wise money managers to ensure that the cash keeps flowing and the bills get paid. There are two aspects to wise money management. (1) The money you receive from clients in exchange for your goods and services you provide (income)and (2)The money you spend on inventory, supplies, wages and other items required to keep your business operating. (expenses)

Ask for the sale.
A home business entrepreneur must always remember that marketing, advertising, or promotional activities are completely worthless, regardless of how clever, expensive, or perfectly targeted they are, unless one simple thing is accomplished–ask for the sale. This is not to say that being a great salesperson, advertising copywriting whiz or a public relations specialist isn’t a tremendous asset to your business. However, all of these skills will be for naught if you do not actively ask people to buy what you are selling.

Remember it’s all about the customer.
Your home business is not about the products or services that you sell. Your home business is not about the prices that you charge for your goods and services. Your home business is not about your competition and how to beat them. Your business is all about your customers, or clients, period. After all, your customers are the people that will ultimately decide if your business goes boom or bust. Everything you do in business must be customer focused, including your policies, warranties, payment options, operating hours, presentations, advertising and promotional campaigns and website. In addition, you must know who your customers are inside out and upside down.

Become a shameless self-promoter (without becoming obnoxious).
One of the greatest myths about personal or business success is that eventually your business, personal abilities, products or services will get discovered and be embraced by the masses that will beat a path to your door to buy what you are selling. But how can this happen if no one knows who you are, what you sell and why they should be buying?
Self-promotion is one of the most beneficial, yet most underutilized, marketing tools that the majority of home business owners have at their immediate disposal.

Project a positive business image.
You have but a passing moment to make a positive and memorable impression on people with whom you intend to do business. Home business owners must go out of their way and make a conscious effort to always project the most professional business image possible. The majority of home business owners do not have the advantage of elaborate offices or elegant storefronts and showrooms to wow prospects and impress customers. Instead, they must rely on imagination, creativity and attention to the smallest detail when creating and maintaining a professional image for their home business.

Get to know your customers.
One of the biggest features and often the most significant competitive edge the home based entrepreneur has over the larger competitors is the he can offer personalized attention. Call it high-tech backlash if you will, but customers are sick and tired of hearing that their information is somewhere in the computer and must be retrieved, or told to push a dozen digits to finally get to the right department only to end up with voice mail–from which they never receive a return phone call.
The home business owner can actually answer phone calls, get to know customers, provide personal attention and win over repeat business by doing so. It’s a researched fact that most business (80 percent) will come from repeat customers rather than new customers. Therefore, along with trying to draw newcomers, the more you can do to woo your regular customers, the better off you will be in the long run and personalized attention is very much appreciated and remembered in the modern high tech world.

Level the playing field with technology.
You should avoid getting overly caught up in the high-tech world, but you should also know how to take advantage of using it. One of the most amazing aspects of the internet is that a one or two person business operating from a basement can have a superior website to a $50 million company, and nobody knows the difference. Make sure you’re keeping up with the high-tech world as it suits your needs. The best technology is that which helps you, not that which impresses your neighbors.

Build a top-notch business team.
No one person can build a successful business alone. It’s a task that requires a team that is as committed as you to the business and its success. Your business team may include family members, friends, suppliers, business alliances, employees, sub-contractors, industry and business associations, local government and the community. Of course the most important team members will be your customers or clients. Any or all may have a say in how your business will function and a stake in your business future.

Become known as an expert.

When you have a problem that needs to be solved, do you seek just anyone’s advice or do you seek an expert in the field to help solve your particular problem? Obviously, you want the most accurate information and assistance that you can get. You naturally seek an expert to help solve your problem. You call a plumber when the hot water tank leaks, a real estate agent when it’s time to sell your home or a dentist when you have a toothache. Therefore, it only stands to reason that the more you become known for your expertise in your business, the more people will seek you out to tap into your expertise, creating more selling and referral opportunities. In effect, becoming known as an expert is another style of prospecting for new business, just in reverse. Instead of finding new and qualified people to sell to, these people seek you out for your expertise.

Create a competitive advantage.
A home business must have a clearly defined unique selling proposition. This is nothing more than a fancy way of asking the vital question, “Why will people choose to do business with you or purchase your product or service instead of doing business with a competitor and buying his product or service?” In other words, what one aspect or combination of aspects is going to separate your business from your competition? Will it be better service, a longer warranty, better selection, longer business hours, more flexible payment options, lowest price, personalized service, better customer service, better return and exchange policies or a combination of several of these?

Invest in yourself.
Top entrepreneurs buy and read business and marketing books, magazines, reports, journals, newsletters, websites and industry publications, knowing that these resources will improve their understanding of business and marketing functions and skills. They join business associations and clubs, and they network with other skilled business people to learn their secrets of success and help define their own goals and objectives. Top entrepreneurs attend business and marketing seminars, workshops and training courses, even if they have already mastered the subject matter of the event. They do this because they know that education is an ongoing process. There are usually ways to do things better, in less time, with less effort. In short, top entrepreneurs never stop investing in the most powerful, effective and best business and marketing tool at their immediate disposal–themselves.

Be accessible.
We’re living in a time when we all expect our fast food lunch at the drive-thru window to be ready in mere minutes, our dry cleaning to be ready for pick-up on the same day, our money to be available at the cash machine and our pizza delivered in 30 minutes or it’s free. You see the pattern developing–you must make it as easy as you can for people to do business with you, regardless of the home business you operate.
You must remain cognizant of the fact that few people will work hard, go out of their way, or be inconvenienced just for the privilege of giving you their hard-earned money. The shoe is always on the other foot. Making it easy for people to do business with you means that you must be accessible and knowledgeable about your products and services. You must be able to provide customers with what they want, when they want it.

Build a rock-solid reputation.
A good reputation is unquestionably one of the home business owner’s most tangible and marketable assets. You can’t simply buy a good reputation; it’s something that you earn by honoring your promises. If you promise to have the merchandise in the customer’s hands by Wednesday, you have no excuse not to have it there. If you offer to repair something, you need to make good on your offer. Consistency in what you offer is the other key factor. If you cannot come through with the same level of service (and products) for clients on a regular basis, they have no reason to trust you . . . and without trust, you won’t have a good reputation.

Sell benefits.
Pushing product features is for inexperienced or wannabe entrepreneurs. Selling the benefits associated with owning and using the products and services you carry is what sales professionals worldwide focus on to create buying excitement and to sell, sell more, and sell more frequently to their customers. Your advertising, sales presentations, printed marketing materials, product packaging, website, newsletters, trade show exhibit and signage are vital. Every time and every medium used to communicate with your target audience must always be selling the benefits associated with owning your product or using your service.

Get involved.
Always go out of your way to get involved in the community that supports your business. You can do this in many ways, such as pitching in to help local charities or the food bank, becoming involved in organizing community events, and getting involved in local politics. You can join associations and clubs that concentrate on programs and policies designed to improve the local community. It’s a fact that people like to do business with people they know, like and respect, and with people who do things to help them as members of the community.

Grab attention.
Small-business owners cannot waste time, money and energy on promotional activities aimed at building awareness solely through long-term, repeated exposure. If you do, chances are you will go broke long before this goal is accomplished. Instead, every promotional activity you engage in, must put money back in your pocket so that you can continue to grab more attention and grow your business.

Master the art of negotiations.

The ability to negotiate effectively is unquestionably a skill that every home business owner must make every effort to master. It’s perhaps second in importance only to asking for the sale in terms of home business musts. In business, negotiation skills are used daily. Always remember that mastering the art of negotiation means that your skills are so finely tuned that you can always orchestrate a win-win situation. These win-win arrangements mean that everyone involved feels they have won, which is really the basis for building long-term and profitable business relationships.

Design Your workspace for success.
Carefully plan and design your home office workspace to ensure maximum personal performance and productivity and, if necessary, to project professionalism for visiting clients. If at all possible, resist the temptation to turn a corner of the living room or your bedroom into your office. Ideally, you’ll want a separate room with a door that closes to keep business activities in and family members out, at least during prime business and revenue generating hours of the day. A den, spare bedroom, basement or converted garage are all ideal candidates for your new home office. If this is not possible, you’ll have to find a means of converting a room with a partition or simply find hours to do the bulk of your work when nobody else is home.

Get and stay organized.
The key to staying organized is not about which type of file you have or whether you keep a stack or two of papers on your desk, but it’s about managing your business. It’s about having systems in place to do things. Therefore, you want to establish a routine by which you can accomplish as much as possible in a given workday, whether that’s three hours for a part-time business or seven or nine hours as a full-timer. In fact, you should develop systems and routines for just about every single business activity. Small things such as creating a to-do list at the end of each business day, or for the week, will help keep you on top of important tasks to tackle. Creating a single calendar to work from, not multiple sets for individual tasks or jobs, will also ensure that jobs are completed on schedule and appointments kept. Incorporating family and personal activities into your work calendar is also critical so that you work and plan from a single calendar.

Take time off.
The temptation to work around the clock is very real for some home business owners. After all, you don’t have a manager telling you it’s time to go home because they can’t afford the overtime pay. Every person working from home must take time to establish a regular work schedule that includes time to stretch your legs and take lunch breaks, plus some days off and scheduled vacations. Create the schedule as soon as you have made the commitment to start a home business. Of course, your schedule will have to be flexible. You should, therefore, not fill every possible hour in the day. Give yourself a backup hour or two. All work and no play makes you burn out very fast and grumpy customer service is not what people want.

Limit the number of hats you wear.
It’s difficult for most business owners not to take a hands-on approach. They try to do as much as possible and tackle as many tasks as possible in their business. The ability to multitask, in fact, is a common trait shared by successful entrepreneurs. However, once in a while you have to stand back and look beyond today to determine what’s in the best interest of your business and yourself over the long run. Most highly successful entrepreneurs will tell you that from the time they started out, they knew what they were good at and what tasks to delegate to others.

Follow-up constantly.
Constant contact, follow-up, and follow-through with customers, prospects, and business alliances should be the mantra of every home business owner, new or established. Constant and consistent follow-up enables you to turn prospects into customers, increase the value of each sale and buying frequency from existing customers, and build stronger business relationships with suppliers and your core business team. Follow-up is especially important with your existing customer base, as the real work begins after the sale. It’s easy to sell one product or service, but it takes work to retain customers and keep them coming back.

Inspirational Corner

If you observe a really happy man you will find him building a boat, writing a symphony, educating his son, growing double dahlias in his garden. He will not be searching for happiness as if it were a collar button that has rolled under the radiator. ~ W. Beran Wolfe

When I read this quote, I thought that the choices that we make determine our happiness. What we perceive as wealth and riches are what give us a sense of satisfaction and a felling of well-being, or it can continuously keep us in a search mode; forever searching for happiness. Happiness does not always come to us as something that we can touch, smell, or horde. We cannot always see it in terms of its physical appearance –size, texture, scent, or color. It is an abstract concept that we feel in our hearts and soul. It is something that we embrace with love, appreciation, and thankfulness

According to W. Beran Wolfe, happiness is in what you do. It is in your action. Great acts will result in happiness. He suggests that the boat builder, the musical genius, the parent whose concern is for his or her child's growth and development, or the individual who is just interested in seeing things grow and blossom, find great joy and happiness. At the end of the day he or she is happy after spending time on nurturing the things and people that he or she loves.

A great many of us keep looking for happiness as if it is something concrete, and that search is sometimes so illusive. We are looking for that “perfect job”, that “perfect man,” or that “perfect life,” but we are not prepared to work towards attaining them. You want that “perfect job”, but more often that not, you are not prepared to develop your skills to get it when the opportunity arises. You wish for the “perfect life”, but do not want to sacrifice your time nor your energies to achieve it. You want that “perfect husband” but if you meet him as a diamond in the rough, you find it too difficult to spend the time to work with him to fulfill both your dreams.

Appreciating what you have and being grateful for the things and people in your life bring you happiness. Just being content is a great start. Great health, family, friends and nature – the sunrise and sunsets, the seasons, and the hills and valleys; are just some of the things that can bring you happiness: if only you can change your mindset; how you perceive that which brings you happiness. Just appreciate all the “good things” that you have in your life.

This is just my thought when I read it. Some of my friend after reading the quote added their own ending; thus changing the last sentence: “He will not be searching for happiness as if it were a collar button that has rolled under the radiator.”

These are some endings shared by my friends who read it:

“He will be enjoying the simple pleasures of life or creating it from his soul.”

“He will be busy being and loving who he is.”

“He will welcome and appreciate all the things and people in his life.

What would be your ending?

Please share your thoughts!

What is the most challenging thing you have been through and how has it changed how you see yourself and your life in general?
I asked this question to explore how women deal with challenges on a daily basis and not just in business. Whether we experience challenges in our business lives or in our personal lives — how we deal with their impact on our lives overall — it runs over.

How you deal with challenges reflect upon your strengths, resourcefulness, resilience, faith and tenancy. Life's challenges are not supposed to paralyze you — they are supposed to help you discover who you are. A quotation by Bernice Johnson Reagon seems to be the best place to situate the issue of challenges in our lives. She says: Challenges should not paralyze you, but they should assist you in knowing more about who you are. It is not intended to break you."

Alfred D. Souza says it nicely when he spoke about challenges. He says:

For a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin – real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, and a debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life. Obstacles are a part of life. Life is encumbered by obstacles.

I found the quote by Bernice Johnson Reagon very fitting and reflective of what I wanted to pose as a thought provoking question. My view is that life is all about challenges. I believe that life challenges are with us no matter what we may do to prevent them. If you are alive and living or have achieved the ability to thrive, challenges will be a part of your life. A young woman may decide to have a baby, for the first time. She is healthy and has been all her life, but on becoming pregnant she can find herself struggling to stay alive and or to bring her unborn baby to term. Your parents may have died and left you with an inheritance, and you may think that everything should be over soon and that you will soon inherit what he or she has left you. But the legal issues that surrounds the estate can be so daunting — the ramifications can take you down an emotional road with no time to morn and grieve your loss. You may find that you may also experience greater loss due to family deception and ramblings. Rest assured that challenges are here with us. We have to learn how to ride the tides of it, until each one subsides.

I asked the question, "What is the most challenging thing you have been through and how has it changed how you see yourself and your life in general?" because I wanted to know where the members of my group Women in Business were, overall in their mind-set. Were they business-minded and prepared at least psychologically to deal with the added challenges that entrepreneurship brings. Some of the challenges that was shared included, dealing with transition, moving beyond your comfort zone, fear, time management, dealing with family issues, finding work/life balance, dealing with illness, our perception of challenge and trying is a part of failing, are some of the primary challenges faced that came out of the data collected.

Some of the challenges that women who embark on entrepreneurship face are:

Dealing with transition:
How do I deal with the change often crosses your mind and it is a real issue as you move from the perceived security of a job to starting your business. Dealing with change regardless of what it is, is in itself daunting, more so for the woman who has grown dependent on an employer. The transition process that women faces as they move from being employed to being self-employed and managing her business, is indeed challenging. Initially you will have doubts, particularly, if you had a “secure job.” A secure job generally guarantees our weekly and monthly salary. It also suggests that you can design a budget to meet your needs, but as a business owner, you now have to ensure that your business is able to bring in an income that will be able to meet your financial needs. The onus is directly upon you. I think that it is much different for the woman who have lost her job, or an unemployed woman, she may find the venture much different. Self-employment might actually be seen as a great opportunity to get into entrepreneurship as a way to gain economic independence; and this transition may be seen as a challenge, but as a change that is very promising and hopeful.

Moving beyond you comfort zone: What you and others perceive as “security” receives a greater and different type of scrutiny. You question your decision, particularly out of the questions that others may ask. In dealing with change, we often have to move beyond our comfort zone. In moving beyond your comfort zone means that you are about to explore uncharted areas — going where you have not gone before. You are about to chart new and unknown territories. In business, you now have to create your client base, create a product or a service, have product or services knowledge, develop communication skills, be proficient in customer-service, and much more to design, manage and sustain a business. We can no longer depend upon our employer to set our work schedules, or designate work for you to do, or determine your performance level — the onus is now upon you to make those decision, to develop the skills and knowledge that you need to know to manage a business successfully.

Fear: As we engage in any change process, fear is a natural emotion that results from not knowing whether you will be successful in any new venture that you may pursue. I believe that fear is a common emotion in anything that we pursue that is new to us, but fear should not be so debilitating to prevent you from forging ahead and finding out your capabilities and potential.
We should not allow fear to control and curtail our progress. According to

H.P Lovecraft, "fear is the oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown" and at the same time Zack Wamp says, that "we should not be afraid to go into a new era, to leave the old beyond." While Queen Latifa says, "we often get trapped by our fears, but anyone who has success has failed before." Here she is giving us courage to go beyond, to go into the unknown in spite of the fear that you may hold.

Time Management is another real challenge that women in business experience. How we manage time is also an issue that women in business often think about as they embark on a business venture. It is indeed challenging to manage a business, while being a mother, wife, student, caregiver, volunteer, and the roles can be even more enlarged. Therefore finding the time to do all of these roles does require a woman to manage her time wisely. The ability to do so, so that she does not experience burn-out requires great management skills. It is therefore important to define a specific time for work, production, child and family time as well as the other roles that you play. Have them included in your to-do-list and give all of them the same priority. Support is needed to accomplish what we want, so it is important to get reliable support. It is advised that as a business woman and oyu have to accomplish multiple roles and responsibilities, in a day that you should ask for help and support. You can also delegate responsibilities to other people who are part of your team.

Dealing with family issues:
In addition to the complex and diverse roles of a woman in business, is having the responsibility to care for a sick child or an ailing elderly parent. Juggling your time to meet these obligations is difficult. Dealing with family relationships is yet another challenge a woman venturing into entrepreneurship often faces while negotiating life’s goals and objectives. One woman noted that just when she started her business, she had to deal with infidelity in her marriage. Another noted that just when she started her business, her spouse got ill, and she had to deal with it — providing support as well as needing support.

Finding Life-Work Balance: Many women entrepreneurs still struggle with finding a balance between work and their life. Most women in business hold diverse roles and have multiple responsibilities, in addition to running their businesses — often time, alone. With to much to do, women with businesses often struggle with finding the time to take care of their children, family, work, and caring for their personal well-being; socially, mentally and spiritually.

According to one woman who responded to the question, stated that:

The hardest thing for me to overcome is finding a life-work balance. I run a retail boutique six days a week in addition to managing the company's website. It is hard to balance being a wife (cooking meals, laundry and other household duties) a mom, and running a growing business."

In order to find a balance, it is crucial that women in business set weekly goals that she will like to achieve in every facet of her life. However, if she is not able to achieve all of them at the end of the week, don't dwell upon those that you were not able to accomplish, but celebrate those that you have been able to achieve. Another woman pointed out that, she set a few goals for each week for each facet of her life and she feels great when she gets to cross off any of those things. "It is important to celebrate the small achievements as well as the big ones," she says.

Dealing with illness: Your personal health and the health of family members, is also a challenge that women in business face. Challenges often have a way of teaching us how to better cope with life and showing us what is important to our life and living. Challenges are not always intended to be negative, while it can be a hindrance, it can also be a motivator. Challenges often cause us to reflect, reevaluate what we are doing and redefine the path that we should take. I have personally found that illness is difficult to deal with, plus it is often so far from our minds. We often do not see it as a possible challenge when we engage in a venture, business or otherwise. Many people also shun or feign talking about the issue when it is brought up in a business forum; many women will say, why dwell on the negative, as if to think about sickness will make it happen. I believe that if it is thought about, and preventative measures are put in place, then more than likely it can be circumvented and in the event it occurs you will have a contingency plan in place.

One woman pointed out that, her husband was recently diagnosed with cancer and it really caused both of them to realize how much they took life for granted. She also said that she also realized the importance of having a contingency or emergency plan for her business.
She also added that, she is also truly taking a look at what her true passions are in business and going after them, instead of being off-focused and being involved in everything that excites her. "To thine own self be true has taken on a whole new meaning," she said.
She has taken her life challenges to serve as a motivator and not as a hindrance. She has chosen to make better choices.

Another woman pointed out that, some women have the ability to take adversities that occur in their lives and turn it into an advantageous, progressive life strategy of survival. She also noted that,
6 years ago she was diagnosed with severe clinical depression and it nearly killed her — with two young children, a loving husband and living close to her family by the sea — what did she have to be suicidal about? But she was.
She saw her recovery as a miracle. She noted that, "recovering from that was a miracle and I now enjoy and love everyday of my life. I count myself incredibly lucky." She has now taken her experience, as a motivational force in her life to inspire other women. She now works with business providing them with advice and coaching in the growth of their business and their personal and professional life to achieve success.

I personally believe every business woman can achieve exactly what she wishes to. Yes we have to deal with comfort zones and things that knock our confidence, but having the confidence to step up to the challenge never ceases to amaze me.
I now run The Business Woman’s Network with hands on interactive presentations at our events with some of the U.K's top speakers. We are incredibly passionate about what we do and I know that so much of that comes from my life experiences — quite frankly after self harming, suicidal thoughts and severe depression — I can achieve anything — I now help others believe and achieve that without having to go through what I did.
My biggest obstacle is now my asset. It has helped to shape the woman I am today that can and will achieve everything she wants, but never forgetting that I am not a brain surgeon or someone saving lives, so I can turn the phone off and enjoy my family once in a while. I have loved your stories and look forward to reading more. You inspire me as so many business women do.

Our perception of the challenge: How we perceive challenges can also impact our attitude and performance. If we see it as an obstacle and not as something to make us better and stronger, then more than likely we will fail.
One woman noted that, not having the confidence that you have the skills to be a successful business owner — is a common challenge faced by people who decide to go into business. Another noted that, challenges are just experiences whether good or bad! "Through daily challenges I've discovered great entrepreneurial capabilities within myself! I embrace all of my challenges and continuously move forward."

Trying is a part of failing: Another woman, graciously said, “trying is a part of failing. If you are afraid to fail then you're afraid to try.” Feeling that you have to do it alone makes you feel like not trying. However a great many of us when we embark on a new venture does not take the time to identify where and from whom we can get support and this can make the change very challenging." Another noted that;

"I've been longing to break out of my comfort zone. What keep me going, is my determination, optimism, and openness to life and having a gut feeling that I'm destined for greatness. It's just trying to hone in on distinguishing my strengths and weaknesses and figuring out how to make a living from my passions in life. It's twice as hard (if not near impossible to succeed) going at it alone, and something I'm learning is that I need to rely more on the support of others. Opportunities and resources are available. It's just a matter of reaching out and having the proper support system to maintain and follow through. I hope starting to utilize being a member of this group and others like this will help me create my support system to success in my career!"

The over all advice is that even if you are fearful that you may fail, the objective is to try and you just might achieve your goals. Asking for support or advice also helps you to refine what it is that you want to do. Having the self-confidence that you can do it, also goes a long way in helping you to achieve success. It is important that you develop your self-confidence and self-esteem and also have a high self-concept of who you are — and your self-worth will also escalate. To achieve these attributes, you must also have self-love and passion for what you want to do — and sometimes we just have to dive in — according to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr "faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase." Have faith in your creator and believe in yourself and get rid of fear and do it anyway. If you fail, you can always learn from it and develop a better approach to it and with each time you fail — you will become better at it.

How important is having a succession plan for your business? Is this something you have thought about in the design of your business or you have thought about as your business grows?

Succession planning for small business owner is a question that must be addressed sooner than later by small business owners. According to research there is benefit to having a succession plan, because as you get older you will think of retirement, and having an adequate income to support your life style after retirement is of prime concern as you prepare for the next stage of your life. Having an effective succession plan also puts you in control of your future and the future of your business. It removes you from being dependent upon your adult children and help to address some of their interest and concerns. It also helps to reduce possible conflict that can occur due to inter-generational value system. Therefore to maintain control and financial independence, after you are no longer able to manage your business, think about a plan that will enable a seamless transition from being a busy entrepreneur to a financially secure retiree.

There are three options for business succession including transferring the business to a family member. Research shows that more women entrepreneurs than men are including their daughters into their business, and are more likely to have them a part of their succession plan. In cases where the business owner may not have children, nieces and nephews are often considered as prime candidates to take over the business after retirement, and he or she is generally groomed and taught the inner workings of the company’s management and operations.

Another available option is selling to a partner or an employee, generally referred to as management buy-out. In this situation, the employees of the company may see it beneficial to them to continue the growth and development of the company. They have been a part of the business, some from the inceptions, and they are familiar and very knowledgeable about the company’s operations. They know the business and do have a vested interest in seeing it grow and prosper. In addition to the sentiment and financial benefits, they are also familiar with your already established customer-client base, suppliers, and potential clients and investors. In making the decision to sell to a partner or employees, you should consider whether the employee or employees have the vision and the management capability to assume an ownership role through the transition period and run the business profitably long-term?

Last but not least is the option to sell your business to an outside buyer. If this is the option that you choose to take, it is important to ask the question, should I sell the whole business or part of it? It just my be prudent to remain part ownership rather than giving up total control. You can look towards your customer-base, suppliers, a competitor, or people from the business community overall.

I recently met a business woman who has a business in partnership with her husband, for over forty years and today their three adult children also work in the business. There has been a succession plan whereby the children have been taught to appreciate the business early on in their development. Do you see your business as a legacy you will like your children to continue? Or do you see your business as a venture that you will like to grow in the distant future overall? I believe that these two questions as mature business owners, we should think about and address it early rather than later. Take a proactive approach to succession planning.

Research also shows that some business owner prefers to sell their business because they do not have any children, family members or friends to leave it to. One woman pointed out that she plans to sell her business, as she plans to go on retirement, because she does not have any children to supersede her.
Research further shows that more women are inclined to include their daughters into their business than men are willing to bring their son’s. Do you see your business as a venture that you will like your daughter (s) or children in general to continue? Many business owners see their business as a legacy that they will like their children to continue? Some also see their business as a venture that they will like to grow in the distant future. Recently I met a professional business woman who started a business over 30 years ago, had her business succeeded to her son. Today she has transitioned and is pursuing another venture that she has great passion for, writing.

Another woman business owner noted that, “this is an important matter to me.” “I am teaching both my children — my son, who is a single-parent father, and my daughter, who knows the value of being at home with her children, the "non-location specific" business that I enjoy. It is not only a wonderful way to their own financial well-being, but also their own personal growth — both in business skills and people skills. I wish I had had that advantage that they have when I first got into entrepreneurship. “I will never have to worry about my children or my three grand-daughters being homeless!” Another woman pointed out that it is a great question that allows her to think about the future of her business and her life.
Whatever your mind can conceive and believe, it will achieve. Dream great dreams and make them come true. Do it now!

You are unique. In all the history of the world there was never anyone
else exactly like you, and in all the infinity to come there will never
be another you. Never affirm self-limitations. What you believe yourself
to be, you are.

To accomplish great things, you must not only act, but also dream; not
only plan, but also believe. If you have built castles in the air, your
work need not be lost - put foundations under them. Yes you can.
Believing is magic, you can always better your best. You don’t know what
you can do until you try.

Nothing will come of nothing. If you don’t go out on a limb, you're
never going to get the fruit. There is no failure except in no longer
trying. Hazy goals produce hazy results. Clearly define your goals.
Write them down, make a plan for achieving them, set a deadline,
visualize the results and go after them. Just don’t look back unless you
want to go that way.

Defeat may test you; it need not stop you. If at first you don’t
succeed, try another way. For every obstacle there is a solution.
Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. The greatest
mistake is giving up. Wishing will not bring success, but planning,
persistence and burning desire will.

There is a gold mine within you from which you can extract all the
necessary ingredients. Success is an attitude. Get yours right. It is
astonishing how short a time it takes for very wonderful things to
happen.~ Unknown!

According to the quotation below by Ralph Waldo Emerson:

Whatever course you decide upon, there is always someone to
tell you that you are wrong. There are always difficulties arising which
tempt you to believe that your critics are right. To map out a course
of action and follow it to an end requires courage.

My Thoughts!

Negative voices only serve as obstacles to hinder your growth and development. There are always people in your life to tell you that you shouldn’t be
taking on a task, particularly if it’s tied into your creativity and
passion and entails your independence and abundance. While this may relate to the many
different choices that we make in life, as an entrepreneur, we are
often confronted by others who think that you should not be pursuing a
business venture but that you should be thinking in terms of "finding a
good job" or finding a "permanent job" rather than pursuing "this thing"
as your business venture is often reduced to. The voices of these
negative messages often resonate with you during challenging periods of
your business ventures, and we often ponder on the messages we received
from those we value most in our lives. We often think, "Am I right in
pursuing my passion?" or Am I mad to have taken this course? And are
they right in there assessment of me?” We often doubt our actions and
this process of self-doubt goes on for a while and as a consequence
cripple our progress towards developing a successful business. According
to Emerson, to succeed you should map out a course of action and follow
it through. However to define a course of action and implement it
successfully, you must get rid of the voices of doubt and be courageous
in the pursuit of your happiness. Those negative voices only serve as
obstacles to hinder your growth and development. ~ Dr. Cheryl Cottle
In your pursuit of self-employment, have you been told by loved ones
that you should not, and why not find a “real job”. How this made you
feel and how did you respond? Thanks for sharing.

We are seeing more entrepreneurs, organizations and corporations adopting spirituality within their businesses, with some also fostering spirituality into the overall culture of their enterprises. It is similar to years gone by, when businesses at all levels were showing support and solidarity towards global warming and the preservation of our planet and the survival of mankind. The result was that most businesses included a social plan into their business plan. Every one had a business plan that showed their social and patriotic connectedness to the society — and, in most cases they were environmentally-focused. Similarly we can see spirituality in business with this new trend of thought.

In this paper when I talk about spirituality, I am talking about having, love and appreciation for others and having compassion and consideration. It is about making a decision and conducting oneself in a way that cares for people and the world we live in. Further attributes are ethics and morals, these two attributes stand out as great spiritual values one can have and they are easily taught — this is the underlying theory of spirituality in women entrepreneurship. Spirituality in business is human-centered. It's a humanity-focused approach whereby the individual is treated in a humanistic manner. It is a very fashionable approach adopted by corporations and organizations and in businesses, in today's market place. Spirituality is reflected in our leadership styles and our management of our business. As, I pointed out earlier in this paragraph, spirituality in business is a human-centered approach to leadership and management style. It's a humanity-focused approach to management.

In my own doctoral dissertation, entitled; A Case Study of Three Organization's Plans to Facilitate the Adoption, Diffusion and Infusion of Computer Technology in the Workplace, is that organizations should develop a culture within their organization that is people-focused. Essentially, it postulates that a humanistic-approach to relating with their employees should be adopted — an approach that looks at the employee holistically. It further looked at some of the best practices that organizations can adopt to show that they are indeed concern with the overall well-being of their employees. We also see the ramification of their treatment of their employees and the reciprocal behavior displayed by the employees.

With the advent of more women entering entrepreneurship and with more women holding higher positions within organizations, we are seeing a shift of leadership style as women manage their businesses with great success. We are seeing that women are giving themselves permission to lead from within — to lead from their core — who they are innately. Thus we are seeing more women leaders with love, compassion, apathy and spirituality leading very successful businesses. Women have decided to go against the cultural and social expectations that kept them from freely being themselves and inhibiting their sense of originality and creativity. They are now moving forward in releasing themselves from the limiting beliefs that societal expectations placed upon them, and are debunking its usefulness and relevance. Women are now seeing that it has been controlling them and it has kept them in bondage for to long.

Today there is the movement where women are saying, I want to live my life more holistically. I want to live my life with meaning and with purpose and I want to be authentic. To attain these qualities of life and living, women are giving themselves permission to work against society's traditional beliefs and values, and their own limiting beliefs and lead from within. To lead as women — is to lead from your core — and those who have adopted this strategy are finding it positive and progressive. As women, we are emotional and we function from that perspective, in every thing that we do. We however, should be pragmatic and come to terms that if we decide to become an entrepreneur, we should also look at our businesses from the perspective of production and profitability.

We are often told by our coaches that as business owners, we should not let our "feminine" qualities stand in the way of getting things done. It is recommended that we think as men or we should approach our businesses as men do — from the bottom line. However, as women we should be proud of whom we are naturally — and we should show our femininity in every thing that we do. How can you be a well-rounded leader if you are leaving a part of you out of your abilities and capabilities? Today we see a shift as more women are becoming assertive, critical thinkers showing up as themselves, wearing high heels, as a symbol of speaking up and out. Women are becoming much more conscious that to live, they must be functioning from their heart, spirit and soul.

Our emotive approach to business should be seen in a positive light. It helps us to build relationships, which is a good thing. We should know who are the people with whom we interact, when we do business, including, our clients, employees, suppliers, and every person we work with on a daily basis to carry out the operation of our businesses. Building relationships is not a waste of time, it has great benefits and it has an impact on your business productivity, and profitability. How can you manage if you are not doing it from your core? Yes, we might be having a successful business, but you might just see higher economic performances, if you function from your core in the management of your business venture.

Most women leaders in the workplace utilize a masculine approach to management; and it is expected behaviour. We see it is also reflected in their dress code that mirrors their male counterparts. In most cases they also sport a shot hair cut as if competing with the men folks within the organization. It is very rare that we will meet a woman in upper management position with her hair roll up or hanging loosely. Today more and more women are giving themselves permission to be feminine; thus more women are proud to be sensitive and caring leaders with love and compassion. Many women are also dressing like women — wearing a dress or a skirt suite.

What are women doing differently using a woman-focused approached to management?

Nurturing their spirit through events or programs as: yoga and meditation

Creating and attending family events — it breaks the ice between managers and staff — bringing people together

Being less formal in naming each other to bridge the gap between managers and staff

Involving employees in the decision-making process

Acknowledging their employees performances and contribution

Providing opportunities for growth — training and development

Developing the intellectual capacity of your business and employees

Providing incentives and awards for creative ideas

Creating an environment for creative ideas and innovations — a think-tanks or an incubators for the creation of new ideas and new knowledge

Having genuine tolerance for each other

Seeing the value of forgiveness

Opportunities to teach others self-love — facilitating self love so that you will be able to love others unconditionally

Simply put spirituality and business is about how you treat your employees, clients, and the other people that you have to interact with on a daily basis? Do you treat them in a loving, caring and compassionate way with respect and appreciation? As a small business owner, you can create an atmosphere of love, respect, appreciation, compassion, and apathy, by first starting with you and it will have a trickling effect — that will affect your employees also. The reciprocal change that we can see is that your employees will feel good to work with you — they will feel committed, and they will feel a connection to your business and you. They will truly feel that they belong to your business or company. You will also see the change within the behavior of your employees, in the way they connect socially to you and to each other — therefore social-connectedness also comes out of the way that you treat them. Lastly, employees feel a sense of loyalty to you and your company, and will spread the word of your business. They will be your best ambassador of your brand. These are just some benefits to a business who are using a spiritual approach to management style or who are thinking of introducing spirituality into their business plan.
